I'm trying to be positive but

it's just one thing after another again.
I am starting to think I am jinxed with kitchen appliances. Fridge just given up the ghost - 6 weeks out of manufacturers warranty  . Second time it's packed up in 9 months.
Microvwave died on Sunday, 6 months old bought from Amazon new, they collected and have offered repair replace or refund, that's something.

The pilot light for the boiler went out Friday, DH got it going, but it's a stupid stupid combi boiler that is great in the winter but we just can't seem to get hot water out of it without turning the heating on in the Summer.

Went through all this last year, cooker, washing machine, dishwasher and fridge and car all went kapoot between April and October.
I could scream.
Thanks for listening :(

oh jo i'm so sorry to hear about that, it always happens at the worst times to.
I know with our boiler we can't have heating on without the hot water as it acts as a venting system for any excess water apparently, may be same in reverse for your boiler to, can you turn all the radiators off so your not having to pay to heat the house? Good luck. xx

    Hi Pania
    Sympathy greatly appreciated :)
Done that with radiators, I am starting to think there must be another switch/setting somewhere we've missed.
DH is defrosting huge block of ice from behind 'frost free' freezer...steaming, but polite email gone to a well known manufacturer. Wouldn't mind if we'd bought c*ap.
Starting to think big companies aren't really up for the green environment statements just the £££ in call out/parts/extented warranties .

    Hi there Jo.

I have a combi boiler too. I have to have it switched to heating and hot water otherwise the hot water part goes up the spout! I just get around it by turning the timer bit off i.e. all the 'pegs' are pushed in from 00.00 to 24.00 hours.

See if you can google "Boiler advice" - you never know there might be some advice free, online somewhere.

Is there anyway you can get a cheap appliance insurance from NPower or British Gas in case something else packs up? Some will start off at £10 a month. Perhaps if you ring and say you are getting quotes from them all they will haggle?

I know it's not very DFW to pay out that sort of 'insurance' but if you want some peace of mind for a while and if you can spare a small amount - it'll be a weight off your mind.

    Good luck hon.

Thanks, googling now someone somewhere will have that nugget. Just done the same thing with the fridge, numerous owners report same failure so fingers crossed...
DH is hot on the insurance and servicing so we're fine there, every time it's serviced the engineer always makes a comment about unreliability on the model.
Calming down as multi - tasking DH has cooked Spag Bol aswell as attempt to fix fridge :)

I am sorry to hear about your appliances while I was living at home. My mums microwave of 15 years gave up the ghost, the hoover died and her exhaust fell off in a space of 2 weeks. That was an expensive month. The microwave died on me & I got blamed & of course paid half of it.

We had a fridge that lasted 14 years, in the last 6 we've had two that just die. Same with dishwasher first one lasted 8 years and it was secondhand ! This one is okay (Hell if's gonna happen !) but one before 13 months - cheaper to replace than repair.

Or am I just unlucky ?

  • Sympathies for your appliance difficulties, maybe this will help. Ive just found a web site called freecycle. (google your local site) They are based in all areas and its people donating free stuff for recycling. You can also donate anything you would like to get rid of. Hope this helps. Now off to work out my debts for the first time in years, after watching Martins video - wish me luck

Give the Fridge company a chance to do the right thing and repair or replace it. State that you realise it's very slightly out of warranty but it's already needed one repair within warranty and you do not expect a fridge to last that short a time. See if they'll help you first before you go in with the big guns, hopefully they'll sort it out.

It's more than giving the fridge people the "chance to do the right thing" - if this is the second time this fault has happened and the first one was within the warranty period, they're legally obliged to fix it.

I had the same problem with my ipod - the damn thing kept breaking and they kept replacing it. Until it was outside of the warranty. But after many hours and lots of legal-ish letters, they were forced to concede that because the same fault had occurred within the warranty period, they were obliged to replace it.

    Is it the same fault?

They just don't make appliances like they used to. We had a tv in my house growing up that was as old as me. It died when I'd finished uni, sometime in my early 20s. It's replacement died 2 years after it was bought! Apple actually told me at one stage in the ipod debacle that they considered ipods to be disposable items and they should last only one year! Unbelievable! Funnily enough, they wouldn't give me that in writing....

Get on freecycle, it's marvellous for getting things you need. And it saves items being junked in the landfill as well.
