ASDA and Sainsburys

I wonder about that sort of calculation.
Over the past few years, I've watched Sainsbury's ramp its prices from being roughly on a par with the rest (maybe a shade more than Asda) to quite markedly higher, with the exception of Waitrose.
Here's a recent example. Last Saturday, Sainsbury's were selling Whitefurze propagator tops (think gardening) at £2 each. Two days later, I found Morrison's selling the identical product for £1.
I top-up shop at Sainsbury's after a trip to Morrisons so I have many prices lodged in my mind as I wander round the former. The differences can be quite surprising and on a big shop I reckon I could quite easily save the cost of petrol on a 20 mile drive.
Prediction: Sainsbury's is heading for big trouble if a price war breaks out.0 -
(Prepare for multiple quotes being thrown back at you, and the many reasons why you're an idiot, from the Geordie Horse Puncher. All the shops are exactly the same fool).0

I always check ASDA, Tesco & Sainbury's when adding things to the shopping list. I'm retired, but just on a occupational pension, so I have both the time and financial incentive to do so. I'm lucky in having Lidl and then the three other supermarkets in a convenient loop. I have to go to Lidl first, as you can't check their prices online.
In general, for what I buy, ASDA are usually cheapest, followed by Tesco. Sainsbury's sometimes look cheaper, but not when you allow for their odd weights and capacities. For a lot of things, they are suspiciously the same. For a few things, surprisingly, Lidl haven't been the cheapest.
The Clubcard and Nectar card points and, if and when I get one, an ASDA Price Guarantee voucher, are nothing more than a nice little bonus. If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?

For me it's a half hour walk along the riverbank in to town. I sometimes take the boat instead. It is a better use of time.0 -

I think you'll find most people drive to the supermarket these days.0 -

Yes but what you were answering was
"Most people don't want to travel ten's of miles, just to go to a supermartket."
Also, I'm not sure you are right. Many people live close enough to supermarkets to walk there, and many people take the bus.
Most car owners/drivers think "everybody drives", but many people don't. Even ones that do drive don't always need to drive to a supermarket.0 -
So Asda will ALWAYS be at least 10% cheaper than everywhere else. It still puzzles me why people go elsewhere.
Joe has already posted why the claim that Asda will ALWAYs be at least 10% cheaper is incorrect, hopefully helping you towards solving the 'puzzle' but there are also many other reasons why people go elsewhere - for a lot of people price is not the only issue to consider when deciding where to shop. A lot of people will consider the location/accessibility of shops, availability of particular products, quality, the experience and customer service. For me, Asda falls down in many of these areas and since I don't often buy branded/prepared foods the price match doesn't really benefit me.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
Location: All the supermarkets are pretty much equidistant from me so location doesn't come into my decision making.
Availability of products: They all stock exactly what I need, apart from Lidl and Aldi, which are both extremely limited.
Quality: All the same, except for Lidl and Aldi which are decidedly dodgy at times, especially for 'fresh' produce, cleaning products and everything else for that matter.
Customer Service: All exactly the same except for Lidl and Aldi which are just awful. Easily the worst in the entire retail industry.
So for me it all boils down to price of goods, and Asda is always the cheapest for the stuff I buy. If people want to pay more for 'exclusivity' or for daft loyalty points, that's fine. If people want to pay more In a shop because they are a bit lazy and it's closer for them, that's fine. And if you want to keep kidding yourself that Lidl and Aldi are 'Just as good, if not better. And are much, much cheaper' then that's fine too.
It's all about choice I suppose, and people do indeed have different reasons for going to different shops. I do pop into them all when there is a genuine bargain on. But most of the time it's Asda for me. But thanks for solving the puzzle for me0 -

Ha ha! I love people who exaggerate like a child in a school playground when posting. Easily the worst customer service in the entire retail industry.
You should write tag-lines for movie posters.
And to claim that Asda, of all places, is cheaper than Lidl and Aldi is also good for chuckles.
Yeah, because I, like, have never been in Asda before and so cannot possibly compare. It sounds AMAZING!! I've only saved probably a couple of thousand by shopping at Aldi these past few years. If only there was some way I could buy things in Asda. I'd be loaded!!
Ha. I'd think you were a (bad) troll if you hadn't had so many posts.
Oh well, each to their own. I actually do like Asda more than the other mainstream supermarkets. Certainly, if you eat a lot of processed food and chocolate, they are quite good.
I think I'll stick to saving even more money by shopping at Aldi though. My local store must be getting into lots of trouble with head office with their fast, friendly service and their shop full of happy customers. I'll be sure to remind them that they should be providing THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE...(pause for dramatic effect)...IN THE ENTIRE RETAIL INDUSTRY!!!
Brilliant!0
