Is it a mildew smell? Try cleaning the rubber seal. Vinegar is often recommended. I find a cap of Dettol in the drawer on the hottest wash.

Regularly doing a hot wash empty if you have nothing that can be washed hot may help prevent it - because a lot of clothes are now wash below 40 and energy saving our washing machines don't get a hot wash.

what type of washing powder do you use?

I had this all the time plus the clothes would smell if i left them in the machine and didn't take them out immediately after the cycle had finished.

I read that it was because I used non bio so switched to bio and havent had an issue since :) i also wash everything at 60 deg but have always done this.

Washing machines smell because people don't wash at high temperatures any longer and use liquid detergents. I do a 'maintenance wash' every month but I also wash all my bedding and towels at 90c so I don't get a smelly machine.

Read this and follow the instructions: http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/fix-it-yourself/cleaning-maintenance/2657-smelly-washing-machines.html
