What happens if you have toothache under a crown?

I've had toothache for the last 5 days and have an appt with my dentist on Monday. The pain (which is getting worse
) seems to be coming from the back of my mouth where I have two 18 year old crowns. What happens? Does the dentist remove the crowns to have a look or can they see what the issue is without doing that? And if they remove the crown, will it go on again ok? There seems to be a fair bit of receding that's happened.
Any advice appreciated.

There are many ways of dealing with it, depending on what is actually wrong.
X-rays can see problems without disturbing the crown. Signs and symptoms can diagnose what's wrong as well.
The crown might be removed, or it might be fixed by making a hole through it.
Many options. Don't worry! How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Thanks Toothsmith, you've put my mind at rest!0
