No direct trains to Manchester airport anymore?

Hello. Hope you can help. I want to go from Dewsbury to Manchester airport at the end of May and returning in mid June. Up until end May there are direct trains but from when I need to travel there are very few (and nine at the right times), they all change at Manchester Piccadilly. Why is this?

It's stupid that you can get a train direct to Manchester Airport from Leeds, but Leeds Bradford Airport is harder to get to via public transport.
  • Nor Middlesbrough or Newcastle. But you will be able to get direct trains from Dewsbury to Liverpool, Hull and Scarborough instead.

I would advise you change at Huddersfield, instead of Piccadilly. This will be a same-platform change, so is simply a matter of stepping off the train, and onto the platform briefly, before stepping on a following train.

As for why it is, it's because the service patterns are changing to accommodate an overall increase in services. In some cases it means that through trains are no longer available between some pairs of stations, but overall more through train opportunities will be created.

The problem with changing at Huddersfield is that the trains are hideously overcrowded between Leeds and Manchester. It's not a great prospect with luggage.
  • In fairness to FTPE, there isn't a shortage of trains to Manchester Airport from Piccadilly - during the day they can be about once every 10 mins on average. When I have used the direct link, the service has often had some 'waiting time' at Piccadilly anyway.

The decision to add extra trains between Manchester and Leeds is long overdue and it sounds like TPE have done their research - if the people of Dewsbury aren't using the direct link, they can't expect to keep it.
