Question about magazine subscriptions

Quite a few of the magazines I've wanted to subscribe to all had "minimum term 12 months" in small print, but since payment is done quarterly by direct debit, what would happen if you were to cancel it?

I thought direct debits were not credit agreements and most magazines allow you to cancel whenever you want, so surely they won't send bailiffs after you if you decided to cancel?

I want to subscribe to a couple of magazines (both of which have minimum term 12 months) on greatmagazines.co.uk, but can't seem to find any info on what the penalty for cancelling early is
