I don't get it everyone else I've said this to agrees with me :D I think perhaps I am coming off the wrong way in the post hence getting negative replies. Maybe I'm just not seeing but I thought I would get more people in agreement on this forum not less as this is a money saving forum!

Even my friend last night - before giving my opinion when I said about the pub charging £7 or £11 to hold a party - she looked confused and said surely they would give you a discount if your having a party their?

£11 is cheap per head - but that was just a room in top of a pub which wasn't very big so not something I was considering but the blatant '£7 a head' then £11 a head if you held a party their was a bit bizarre to me

The way I see it if you have a pub > you already have to take into account overheads like heating lighting insurance so when you price a meal at £7 it is priced with the profit to cover this, now someone comes along with a big party yes it is going to mean more work more costs more staff - but if your original price has enough profit on it to keep the pub running then adding an extra £4 is basically because they know people will pay it not because they need to.

I guess we all have different opinions, I do understand that if we were taking a space that would normally have been used for the pub that they would be able to use the same table so many times over.

I'm really not that bad honest ;) Just trying to reason with myself what the best options are.

It is annoying that as soon as you say wedding the price goes up, but I still think £11 sounds a very good price per head.

It may be a room that they wouldn't normally use but they will have to set the room out and lay out the tables according to your table plan which will take time, they will also be under a lot more pressure to get 50 meals in one rather than 50 meals out over an hour or 2, and I do think the extra planning and actual work on the day will be more than a normal lunchtime. and actually £200 isn't much if they need to get extra staff in to help get the food all served up and out to your guests in a fairly short time frame.

As others have said its supply and demand, they charge a premium because they can just look at valentines day or mothers day for example.
Umm several options I could suggest find a venue that you can provide some/all your own catering for.
I had a fab place that did great sit down meal for 80 in smaller room then moved into its large hall for evening of 200 which we provided own food for and decorated the night before, even the bar was reasonable price.

Hire a marquee/barn and get outside catering for buffet style meal and evening finger food also hire proper toilets.

Book a different day than saturday. The last wedding I attended was on a monday, it cost the couple getting married under half the price for a saturday wedding, was available at short notice and it was a beautiful place which provided sit down meal and evening buffet. I think it saved them around £2,500.

Reduce the number of people being invited just close family and a few friends then throw a big party another day.

    Good luck on your search.

It's annoying that as soon as you say wedding the prices go up. However I'd snap up £11 a head as it's a very good price. I'm paying £50 a head (£35 food £15 drinks).

Yea, we've decided to just go for a hot buffet / cold buffet now in the evening - I really did want the 'sit down and speechs' kind of do - but looking at the hotel package deals the menus are just not 'us' and anything we can think of is stuff you can go down the local pub and order.

Maybe not the most wedding menu but were just going to have a BBQ buffet kind of thing ....which now we know what we want for the menu should make life easier on what kind of venues we can look for! (Now that we know what we want we know what to look for )

Fingers crossed, it allows us to be a bit more original as well as we will do a few extras and some sort of pudding. :D
People don't know what they want until you show them.
  • Have you considered something like fish and chips?! I've heard someone who did this and it went down really well!
