I remember when the recession hit the first thing I thought was "Ahhh nice quiet skies without all those pesky planes".

    Not here it wasn't.

Aberdeen has the busiest heliport in the world.

It's like a scene from Apocalypse Now every day up here...

In fact I've taken to walking outside bare-chested at the start of the day shouting "God I love the smell of HPI in the morning........ Smells like........ Victory".

Sometimes I follow it up with a bit of Aberdonian Tai Chi.... Which in case you haven't seen it, mostly involves a very slow motion version of groin thrusting and fist pumping while smiling benevolently at all the renters looking on in envy.....

But more often I just light an expensive cigar and grin at my fellow homeowners.

Sorry, what was this thread about again? :)

The economy is growing, unemployment is falling. It all looks pretty good to me.

That the Government isn't letting spending run away any more is a good thing and that's what is letting the recovery happen.

Has the OP ever travelled on the M25, or any other major motorway in the UK ??

Look up a Google map, and click traffic and see how much RED shows up, meaning congestion (other maps are available )

This board is amazing.............during the downturn one side was adamant everything was rosy, and now the economy is improving the other side post !!!!!!!! trying to claim it's not happening.

Most posters here seem to be followers of the Baghdad Bob school of information............"Their infidels are committing suicide by the hundreds on the gates of Baghdad. Be assured, Baghdad is safe, protected."

The only time I remember the skies being quiet here was during the couple of days when the volcano shut down the airports.

Everyone was going around saying "it's really bright today" and talking about how quiet it was, and then we realised... no contrails.

Then it went back to normal.

BTW, what's the point of this thread? Get with the economy, fellas, we're recovering and soon to be booming!

  • I remember that time and it was blissful to have some peace and quiet for once. The ironic thing was that one person who commented to me how much she was enjoying that quiet then commented in the next breath how she was planning to go on holiday (by plane) in a few weeks time.

As someone who realised I have no right to complain about planes but continue to use them and I have therefore given up flying, I was ...ahem....somewhat "struck" by that comment, but bit my tongue fast:cool:

One thing I'm learning from this thread is that I have the feeling that those posters who are saying the economy is fine might actually NOT be joking. If so, then that's quite a thought to digest of itself, ie that some people really do believe it's okay:rotfl:Now struggling to get my head round why people would think so in the face of all evidence to the contrary...

While we're doing OK right now, I think some people are getting very carried away! None of the problems of a few years ago have been solved. While we're on the way up at the moment, longer term its likely to be downhill. I don't see anything sustainable about this "recovery"

And to answer the question one positive I think is that for us moneysaving types i.e. people who are careful with their money, we are relatively better off in a declining economy because by nature we haven't taken financial risks that rely on things like house prices growing.

I know a few people who have been paying mortgages at less than 1% for the last 5 years. The recession has been a real bonus for them.
I have benefitted enormously. My mortgage interest rate hit 6% in 2007-8. It's been 0.99% for years now.

Yes, I can imagine it gets quite hectic under the flight path of Caerdydd International.
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.

I think you mean Caerdydd Rhyngwladol. :)

Although I think, technically speaking, it's just called Cardiff Aiport or Maes Awyr Caerdydd. As it happens, I think the flight paths have been getting quiter over the past few years, but I think that's largely because people have been going to Bristol Airport instead.

Some peoples misery has always been someone elses joy.

The huge rise of things such as pay day lenders is testament to that.
