I am going to be making a regular (daily) journey within West Yorkshire soon - each return costs about £2.80. Does this mean that I could purchase a few trips in advance, or does it have to be all on one train ride kind of thing?

You can purchase many trips. Just get to the end of the booking and click add another journey. Don't know how many journeys you can have on each booking though.
