Daughter on tax code BR?

My daughter graduated university in June, she couldn't find work straight away and so signed on until December when she signed off as had 4 weeks work over Christmas.
She started full time work in February just for 6months when her contract ends, she has been put on tax code BR, she paid a large chunk of tax last month. Looking on line it seems that BR is used for a 2nd job, which she doesn't have?

Is this the correct code, if not what should she do to get it changed?

Thanks

BR (= Basic Rate, ie 20%) can be used for a second where the personal allowance is all used at a first one but it would also be used if the employer doesn't have a P45 or a completed starter form which confirms the person doesn't have another job.

Did she get a P45 from the job centre?

Did she complete a P46 or starter checklist when she started the job?

Yes she says that she gave her P45 to her new employer, who are the council, not sure about a P46 I will ask her when she comes home.

    Thanks for the help,

She has just came home and has the copy of her P45 the one she gave to her job, it says tax code 944L, she will speak to payroll tomorrow.

Last month she paid over £300 tax, will she be able to get this back?

So 944L is what she should have been put on. It's possible that the P45 was handed in too late for February's payment.

No need for a P46 or Starter form if she has a P45.

If they use the correct code before 5th April (probably unlikely now) she would get it back automatically. If not she will have to apply for a rebate once the tax year has finished. For that she will need her P60.
