Hi all
My employer wants me to sign something in the morning to say they can take money out of my wages every week just incase we have a knock in the company vans we drive.......and at the end of the year they will give me the money back if I have no accidents.
I dont want to sign this document.......
Is it lawful what they are asking?
Has anyone heard of this before?
Could there be any comeback on me if I dont sign it?
Many thanks

I suspect this will depend on what your employment contract states, in particular whether they already expect you to pay the costs of any claim if you have an accident in a company vehicle - insurance excess, out of pocket stuff, etc.
Personally my hackles would rise at the thought of it - effectively "guilty until proven innocent", they're effectively assuming you will damage the vans, until you prove you don't. I would be concerned that they might suddenly find some scratches or other minor damage and keep the money, along similar lines to dodgy car-hire companies that invent reasons to keep your deposit. If you have a record of damaging the vans, of course, it might not be so unreasonable.
I can't say what they can do if you don't sign, again that's an employement law thing as they might be trying to change your contract, and there are rules for doing so that they have to conform to. Worth a visit to CAB, perhaps?0
