Ross and Roberts...

Ive been making steady payments of £100 a month to pay off a council tax bill from the previous year of £600. I missed a payment in december they added some visitor fees but it didnt go up by much. In the same month i asked to have something in writing to show how much i have paid and how much is remaining. They didnt send me anything and in January i made 2 payments of £100 each which. A guy came round the other day on the 27/03 telling me how much i owed and that i have missed a payment. I told him i wanted something in writing in January but didn't receive it. However i made the payment as i was already going to be late for work. I see today a letter saying that a £150 van fee has been added on to the bill. THEY CAN GO !!!! THEMSELVES. My total paid is now £700 with another £150 to pay. The two payments in January was meant to cover febuary aswell, or so the lady told me on the phone. Any advice would be appreciated as i would hate to spend half my weeks wages on this !!!!!!!!.

    Hello there,

Has the bailiff been in to your property? If so have they made a list of your belongings?

If the answer to the above is yes then it may be possible for an attendance fee and a van fee to be added.

If the answer to the above is no, they cannot add such fees. If they have not taken control of any of your goods the maximum that can (currently) be applied is for two visits - a total for £42.50.

If you can give us a little more detail we can advise on what can or cannot be charged, and what can be done to challenge any excessive fees.

Here's a link to our bailiffs and council tax fact sheet: https://www.nationaldebtline.org/EW/factsheets/Pages/02%20EW%20Council%20tax%20recovery/Default.aspx

    Thanks and best wishes,

    David @ NDL.
