Why do banks need physical proof of ID?

I've banked with HSBC for over 20 years and lived in the same house for over 20 years. I'm also on the electoral roll so can anyone explain why I keep needing to take ID into a bank whenever I open a new account online. The bank manager I spoke to today seemed puzzled as well.

Have you checked your CRA file?
I used to have to as there were two ways of writing my address and so effectively I had two credit files. The council used one way, I used another and so my electoral roll didnt show up0 -
Just had a look and everything appears fine. Funnily enough there's 2 ways of writing my address too but I always make sure I use the "official" way when applying to banks and that's the one on my credit file as well so it shouldn't be that causing the problem.0

How is your address written on the Electoral Register? Perhaps the problem lies there.0

Check you address against the postcode:

That is the official way of writing your address.0 -

Check your Birth Certificate and Driving Licence, you will see on there that they are not to be used for Identification purposes.
Why is that do you think?
It is because the NAME on the document is not you, it is a Legal Person or Fiction that you use in Commerce, it is not you.
Have a listen to Bill Turner on You Tube - What's in a name, he explains it extremely well.
The Bank requires the Information to attach your NAME to the paperwork, have a look at all documents you have received from a Bank, they will be addressed to the Legal Person/Fiction. Look at it as your boot, car, hat etc that you would use when playing monopoly.
Huge topic, if you are inquisitive, google has all the information with heaps on You Tube. Alternatively look on any good online Legal dictionary under the word "Person". Hope this helps?

I had the same thing with Nationwide to setup a bank account, however at exactly the same time as applying for the bank account they offered me a credit card with a 7k limit! The Credit card turned up before I had even received the paper work for the bank account to take into the branch.
I told the branch staff and they couldn't understand how that was possible.0 -

Quite rightly the site has moderated your post.
If you have an intelligent remark, rather than an insult, I will be happy to deal with it.0
