Amazon requiring 'Seller Verification'

Hello all,
Wondered if anyone knew about this or could explain it.
I sell stuff very infrequently on Amazon - my old phones, etc - probably to the tune of £200 a year.
I know Amazon take a few quid more than EBAY, but I find it very low risk, as all the money goes through Amazon, and they will refund you if anything goes wrong.
They've asked me via email for "Action Required: Please provide information for your Selling on Amazon payment account" (copied email below)
I thought I'd quickly get it done, but looking at it, it's very invasive - they want passport copies, numbers off documents, bank accounts verified - seems far too much.
What does everyone think? It's definately legit, as I signed into Amazon separately, and it gave me a reminder of this.

Dear Seller,
EU regulations require us to collect certain business and personal information from our sellers and take steps to confirm their identity.
To ensure we meet these requirements, you need to open a Selling on Amazon payment account with Amazon Payments Europe S.C.A. from which the proceeds of your transactions on Amazon EU Marketplaces can be disbursed to your bank account.
A self-service feature is available in Seller Central to guide you through the process of providing the information Amazon Payments Europe needs. To begin the process, please log in to Seller Central (https://sellercentral-europe.amazon.com/) using the email address and password associated with your account. Follow the instructions displayed in the notification box on the first page in Seller Central to continue.
Additional information can be found on our help page, “Required Information to Sell on Amazon”:
https://sellercentral-europe.amazon.com/gp/help/help-popup.html?itemID=201200780&pop-up=1
If you need further assistance, please contact Seller Support:
https://sellercentral-europe.amazon.com/gp/contact-us/contact-amazon-form.html
It is essential that you provide this information in order for you to remain eligible for our Selling on Amazon programme. If you do not do so within the next 60 calendar days, you will not be able to open your Selling on Amazon payment account and you will not be able to continue to sell on Amazon.
We are happy to provide any support you need in making the transition to a Selling on Amazon payment account so that you can continue to sell on Amazon without interruption.
Kind regards,
Amazon Services Europe

If it is a requirement that you provide the information in order to continue using their selling platform, and you want to continue using it, then give them the information.
If you don't want to provide the information then stop using their platform.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
I didn't say I wanted to stop using it.
I asked for a view or some background on what is happening. It looks like it's been inflicted on Amazon.0 -
Ask for a copy of their tax records and payments made to HMRC in the last 10 years."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0

I think they have swung from one side of the fence to the other. I think that with too many frauds abusing the Amazon system, it has now become almost impossible to become a legitimate seller. I would not mind sharing that information with a legitimate company such as Amazon, but I am worried where they might keep my data.0
