Can anyone tell me what rhubarb counts as? I understand that it is really a vegetable so if I have rhubarb for dinner will it count as fruit or veg?
And aren't tomatoes a fruit?
It doesn't matter, it counts as one of your 5/7 a day. There's no set amount of either fruit or veg, eg, 5 veg and 2 fruit. Your 5/7 a day can consist of all veg, although fruit should be less due to the sugars in it.0 -

The spud does not count? At all? It's alongside bread & pasta?
Time to panic.
Potatoes don't count apparently, but sweet potatoes do.0 -
We find it really easy but DS LOVES fruit and veg!
He generally has;
A peice of fruit with breakfast (banana)
Some cucumber and baby tomatoes with lunch. At least 2 times a week a soup with veg in.
An apple, raisins or both! As a snack
Then at least 2 or 3 veggies or veggie based dinners.
For pizza he puts sweetcorn and peppers on, I fill cottage pie with carrots and peas.
As someone said veggie soup is cheap! We eat it a lot and use broccoli stalks up tooI'm C, Mummy to DS 29/11/2010 and DD 02/11/2013

I don't know about canned but frozen should count provided it defrosts itself it when cooked it's steamed and not in the microwave as this can kill some of the good. Frozen has many added benefits to 'fresh' store bought as it is frozen at the time or within hours of picking/cutting so less nutrients become lost!
Microwaving is generally considered to be a better method of cooking, as it's the length of time that veg is exposed to heat that causes the Vit C content to drop. See article.I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

Some countries in Europe include potatoes as part of the veg count as long as they haven't been cooked in fat, so boiled, steamed or baked would count but not roast or chips. As I understand it, it has always been recommended to eat seven portions at least a day but when they were deciding what to include they decided that so many people ate less than three portions that the idea of doubling it or more would make them just give up so they picked five as a starting target. They decided though to leave potatoes out as they thought that some people would eat two packets of crisps and a bag of chips and call it three portions. Potatoes are actually one of the only vegetables that you can live healthily on, on its own with just a few other bits and pieces.
I do wonder if this advice will lead to people increasing the variety without increasing the actual volume.
On the fruit front, yes it does contain sugar but I think the issue is really about overall quantities of sugar in your diet. If someone is only getting sugar from whole fruit (not juice) you would have to eat a fair bit to exceed recommended amounts, its when people consume sugar from other foods and then have lots of fruit as well that it becomes an issue.I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly

I normally get 7+ veg a day plus some fruit, taking me up to about 10 portions most days recently. I find it doable, but then I am a vegetarian.
Here's what I've eaten over the last few meals.
Greek salad
Baked sweet potato topped with roast tomatoes, ricotta and herbs
Spinach and mushroom omelette
Cauliflower curry (with a little rice)
Fried courgette, tomato and butterbeans with feta, lemon, chilli and coriander
Stirfry
Chilli tofu with peppers, onions and mushrooms, soy sauce and a little rice (tip: freeze and defrost the tofu then pat away the water with kitchen roll. Freezing makes a big difference. I think I originally read that on these forums somewhere)
Tomorrow I'm going to try chickpea flour flatbread with vegetable puree dips. The flatbread's in the oven now, but it's experimental and I'm not confident it'll work!
I generally have leftover roast veg or some salad in the fridge to serve with things, as well as the usual frozen stuff.Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
House buying: Finished!
Next task: Lots and lots of DIY0
