Sainsbury 'Brand Matching' a con?

People like me just want to do some honest shopping, take offers at face value and not get involved in reading tiny print.
I'm sure we'd all like that but IMO it just ain't going to happen. The SMs think we're a bunch of lazy thickos who don't read or understand Ts and Cs and we have a constant battle to prove we're not.0 -
A con is where someone tries to mislead you.
You cannot blame the supermarket for your failure to read the T&Cs. Item 1 on the FAQ page states ( note the use of "basket" NOT "item" )
. What is Sainsbury's Brand Match?
Sainsbury's Brand Match is a guarantee that if you could have paid less for an identical basket of branded products (same size, flavour, colour etc) at Tesco or Asda, we will give you a coupon at the till for the difference, at the end of that transaction, up to the value of £10.
The value of the coupon we give will be the difference between the Sainsbury's price for your basket and the cheapest price in Tesco or Asda for an identical basket bought on the same day.
Its a good scheme to get customers to buy in Sainsbury's a branded item that they know is cheaper in Tesco or Asda but they fail to inform you sufficiently that not only does the Brand Match the cheaper items in Tesco or Asda the reverse also happens on your total basket purchase. SAINSBUR'YS BRAND MATCH INCREASES THEIR OWN SHELF PRICE IN REAL TERMS BY REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF THE VOUCHER YOU ARE ISSUED. Therefore you could save more by visiting each of the 3 competitors and you would BE BETTER OFF THAN USING SAINSBURY'S BRAND MATCH.0 -
It's usually the case that which ever store I use, they tell me they were the cheapest. Despite the price matching, you have to use the techniques described by marvin above to see any savings.
I think Sainsburys know that the branded basket will usually be cheaper in their store, not because the individual items are cheaper but because most customers will take advantage of a BOGOF on branded items - maybe upshifting from the Sainsburys own brand if the BOGOF makes the brand better value. If they really wanted to match the price of each item in Tesco and ASDA, they would just reduce the shelf price downwards when their competitor reduces a price, and mirror all the competitor's special offers. But they don't, they do it in the way the advertise and aren't particularly mis-leading about how it works.
They also have a website you can log into with your nectar card and see how they calculated the comparisons.0 -
Thank you for your replies.
No worries though, I got my £13 refunded at CS and went to Asda for my £10 tabs
but how much petrol did you use to get to asda? probably £3 worth as they are rarely near each other!!!;););):rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
im tray not davey...pinched my hubbys account!!!
I must stop buying smellies..well until i spot a bargain!
never turn a bargain /freebie down you just never know when you need it0 -
I do my shopping list using mysupermarket https://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/ and then split my list according to where it's cheapest.
I would often do an 'Asda' shop and a 'Sainsburys' shop. (basket in the trolly)
I usually put 1 item through first to see if any nectar vouchers come out, put through the 'brand match' shop, then use the brand match voucher for the 'Sainsburys' shop.
Bit of a faf but works for me.
Just remember that if, for example you just wanted Fairy dishwasher tablets, £13 you can make up the basket with Sainsburys own branded goods and they won't compare.

Forget about degree courses in media studies etc, they should do one in 'applied maths - the supermarket challenge' - far more useful and true to life skills.0
