Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive?

https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/environmental-programmes/domestic-renewable-heat-incentive-domestic-rhi

has anyone else looked at this yet?

I have only learnt about it today, and I see it isn't yet released, but I'm thinking about a ground heat source pump maybe.

We have had solar panels fitted - this seems a natural extension.

Does anyone here know anything they would care to share?

  • Yeah there are quite a few of us here hanging on for the 'promised' RHI.

For me it's been in the pipeline for almost 3 years and had pretty much given up hope but who knows... no longer counting on getting anything so will be a nice bonus if it happens.

But yes if the numbers work for you then a heat pump is an excellent idea. Day in day out our solar 'subsidises' our already efficient ASHP and DHW with a solar immersion unit. Ours replaced LPG so the savings are massive.

Yes, I have a large draughty old house with an old oil boiler, so the RHI should more or less pay for the ASHP installation, whilst running costs should be a bit lower than with oil.
Win win all round (I hope)

  • Well Finally the RHI has been announced and launched today (9th April 2014)!!!!

I would suggest installing a Hybrid system ( A New Air Source Heat Pump) which would run along side your existing Oil Fired Boiler. There are some great new products out on the market which have intelligent control systems which switch between the best and cheapest form of heating for your home depending on the outside Temperature. These systems qualify for the RHI subject to you using an MCS accredited ASHP and accredited installer. For your property I would suggest installing a 400L thermal store power from an immersun which would run from your existing Solar PV array. (These things are relatively cheap to install) I would also suggest you had 2 Solar Thermal Panels feeding additional heat into the thermal store. (Solar Thermal systems qualify for the RHI). Finally an Air Source Heat pump to pump the water round from the thermal store to provide a really low cost heating solution (RHI also available for the ASHP). The existing Solar PV array would provide some help reducing the running costs on the ASHP. Air source Heat Pumps have a SPF of 1:3 meaning for every £1 of electricity you get £3 worth of heating. If you are on oil this is an absolute no brainer, I would expect you would achieve at least £1k per year from the RHI, your existing Feed-Tariff plus the enormous savings on the current Oil costs!
