Property Guardian Recycling

Hi,

Does anyone know the law about councils' responsibility to provide recycling facilities (more specifically how it would apply to properties occupied by property guardians)? I've been a property guardian at 2 places in London, both had rubbish collected, but neither had recycling.

Every time I've tried to find details of UK property law online (not very often) it's been fruitless or a severe headache - plus I probably misinterpret what I do find. Is there a reliable, free online database for this sort of information? Or is it all written on ancient parchments in secret libraries I'd need to study law to access (and translate)?

I have no idea but I wouldn't want you to think that you're being ignored.

In fact I had to Google "Property Guardian". I had guessed roughly what it meant but had not encountered the term.

I would imagine that a local authority would have the same responsibilities for where you are staying as they have for neighbouring properties. Have you tried putting items out for recycling on the same day as your neighbours? If so, do the recycling people just ignore yours?

I suspect the OP won't be back but I'd love to be proved wrong. :)

As far as I know there is no law requiring recycling facilities to be provided beyond basic rubbish collection (and even then if the Council tax isn't being paid on the property it might be doubtful).

So it depends what you are asking. If its a case of the house owners are paying council tax, everyone else in the street has recycling facilities but you don't then you should - although as a property guardian you may not be able to request the appropriate bins etc as they may only deal with the CT payer.

If its the case that no-one in that street gets recycling collections and you want to make some green statement insisting they should then legally you probably don't get much help. I know where I live in Bath certain forms of recycling collection (e.g. food waste) aren't available to those in some of the flats due to collection issues (i.e. putting 20 food caddies out on the street and returning them to the right flats!)

Can you take your bottles to the bottle bank, paper to the mill etc?

Regardless of council there must be some facilities at your local supermarkets or car parks etc?
