Just over half way through my DMP . . . stomach always in knots!

£28,418.00 Paid!

£27,628.93 to go!

Just increased my debt payment to £864 from £555 and hoping to be debt free in december 2016....

It's been one of the most stressful things I've ever had to do in my Life! I just want it to end. I feel so bad on my family for having no money to support us. Days can be so dark and depressing...But I am getting there!

It was the hardest thing I ever decided to do going on my DMP but after 6 years am getting there. One day I might be able to wake up again and not feel sick with worry about money. Lesson very much learned!

  • Well done Scared1, that's a massive amount of money you've paid off so far - you're doing the best thing for your family by tackling the debt. Please don't feel down, you have taken control and are obviously doing great - and it's inspirational to those who have just set off on their DFW journey.

Part of the Furniture PPI Party Pooper Debt-free and Proud!
    Hi Scared1

Keep going, you're doing well. Mine was a similar amount and was an 11 year journey (not proud of how long it took but as I had to reduce my hours due to ill health, I know why it was the way it was). Anyway, I made my last payment in November last year. What a relief that was.

I take each day as it comes, still watch the pounds and pennies, still jump on here for inspiration. My ways of spending have had a total makeover. Sometimes it can be to the point where I won't spend the money out of guilt, no matter how much I need the item.

Having said all that, I decided to see if I was entitled to make a claim for PPI and in January this year, submitted two forms (one to Barclays and one to RBS). RBS handled very speedily and very efficiently, just banked on Friday, 5 cheques totalling £9,816 :j (covers PPI from 1997) - I know I couldn't believe it myself. All going towards jobs on the house that have been put off whilst I've concentrated on debt repayment. Debt repayment money is now overpaying the mortgage. Should be mortgage free in about 5 years (or less if I have my way:rotfl:)

Barclays - well they are a different kettle of fish altogether. I got married in the middle of paying back my debt. Although I provided proof to them as I did to RBS, they've written a cheque to settle in my maiden name, realised their error but its only been by ringing up myself, that I've found out the problem. I've spent nearly 2.5 hrs on the phone last week in 3 different calls. Their customer service team are now going to ring me tomorrow so fingers crossed that I can that resolved, although I don't know how much the settlement is for.

What I'm trying to say, is to look at this as a lesson in life and its steep learning curve. When you know better you do better - as Maya Angelou would say. I certainly get it now! Best of luck to you and your family in your journey. You will get there. Believe you me.
I got there - I'm debt free and intend to stay that way. If I haven't got the cash, it doesn't get bought. It's as simple as that.
  • Snap were the same feeling physically sick at the mo defo just had my light bulb moment !!!
Thought I might have had that when I started my dmp 7 years ago but nope !!! Now in deeper than ever and just been refused an Iva as we can technically afford to pay it all back in less than the 5 years so that's what I'm aiming for :) well ideally I'm aiming for 3 years when my loans end :)

Thankyou all . . . you're comments have helped life me out of the funk a bit. Light is at the end of the tunnel . . . I've done it for this long. When I finish this will be able to focus on paying back a family loan and then hoping we can afford the IVF we need to try for a baby . . . the biological clock is ticking 36 next month . . . but just no way we can afford treatment until then!
  • Good luck. Know how you feel, we are in a similar boat. Just got over halfway and my oh has been laid off. Just want it to be over. Am scrabbling money together in attempt to continue dmp payments so that we can be debtfree in 35 months.
Wishing you all the luck. L2B.xxx
