Which new bank acc prior to a DMP?

I need to open a new bank account prior to my DMP kicking in.
I understand it will need to be basic but are there 'recommended' accounts perhaps better than others?

I will need to have online access.

Thanks as usual

Odd thing is I have a Halifax Reward account rather than a Basic one, so make £5 month and get other offers. Was a Nationwide Flexaccount customer.

If you are planning to work on a cash based system, a Nationwide basic account can be good.

Try Nationwide or Barclays in that case.

Apologies I was looking at this the wrong way around. I dont think my debts are connected with my own bank so should be ok.My debts are with Barclays and Virgin CC(MBNA?)

I bank with Halifax - I assume theres no connection with the above creditors?

Halifax are connected to Lloyds/RBS IIRC.

You can have a Barclays basic account even if you have a debt with Barclays, they don't offset and Stepchange even advise people that it's safe.

I had a £3k overdraft with them that went in to my DMP, but they let me have a basic account which had internet banking with it, and just removed my internet access to the overdraft. Never had any trouble with it and the staff were really helpful and sympathetic when I was setting it all up.

I never have changed my HSBC account. Kept the advanced account as it comes with car recovery and other things which I have used lots! They did one time take £300 from my account which I never got back but that's all in 6 years and was right at the beginning. Also opened a barclays basic account to shift my money into so it's not as visible to HSBC - mortgage is also with them too so wanted them to see some evidence of my income to keep renewing it. I was advised to take out an account by step change with somebody new but it didn't happen...and I am glad I kept my account as is.

They have the right of offset so you should switch.

It's easier to do now, better safe than sorry, and you should end up with a better bank as long as you avoid the Lloyds group.
