Foam roller - should it be this painful!?

Ouch ouch ouch! I know the muscles in my legs, hips and glutes are a bit tight but I can hardly put any weight onto my foam roller. I've just bought one and I was just wondering if its normal to find it sore..well painful actually, at the beginning or I should have bought a softer roller? I'm very slim with hardly any fat so that might not help!

Any thoughts or tips? Thanks

According to friends, it's meant to hurt. One friend says that according to her husband, she makes mooing noises.

It also depends on the state of your muscles. Mine were really tight the first time I used one and that made it really hurt. :(

Err yes, unfortunately. I tried a friends one out that had the pressure point nodules and boy was that painful esp places I know I have tight muscles. Apparently it gets better over time if you regularly use the roller.

I have something called a tiger tail, which means I can use it on my hips. That doesn't hurt quite as much; but I did manage to bruise myself the first time I used it. :o

Yes, it can be extremely painful, but should get better with regular use. If your muscles are very tight have you tried using a trigger point ball on them? Again can be quite painful until the muscle releases, but I have found it works better for me.

Those things look quite evil, tbh.:o

I once had a sports massage, which does similar things to a foam roller. I was nearly in tears at some point because of how much pain I was in.

Thanks for your replies. Well I've had another bash at it and I can just about cope with the pain if I don't put my full weight onto it! Who thought i'd be this tight lol.

I had a google of the trigger ball and to be honest it looks even worse! I got an old tennis ball out and had a go but think I'll stick to the one form of torture for now!

It does get better over time, it's worth sticking at. DH took painkillers the first few times :) You just reminded me I haven't done it for ages, I must try again!

Yes, I'm used to doing sports that can involve pain and that was deff sore. Saying that I'd love a nice sports massage right now to relax a few muscles.

it will be painful as its removing the latic acid from the muscle groups, but will get better after time. it helps the healing process to get you back in the gym etc quicker i.e. not sore/unable to move the next day
