OK - let's tell you what you want to hear....

You are absolutely right, it is incredibly unfair, they are mean and should be prepared to entirely pay for you to attend work, heck... They should even pay for your lunch, your 7 hours sleep and give you a goldfish to keep you company.

You conveniently left out "if that".

Spare a thought for my colleague, he lives even further away and visits "base" far less than me. 60 miles before he can claim anything. Nobody forces him to do the job, but still...that's a lot of free vehicle use the LA are getting out of him.
So you would rather they make you go to base in the morning thus making your colleague go 60 miles and back before going to work?

Yes and Local Authority's budgets are extremely tight. A lot of redundancies going on. Which would you rather have?

OK guys, let's have it your way - let's fleece the taxpayer by driving 15 miles every morning to an empty office, for no reason whatsoever, than it is my place of work on paper. Then waste more time and fuel travelling (usually back in the same direction) to my first job of the day. Then before the day is out, waste a bit more time and fuel travelling back to "base" for no reason whatsoever but to begin my commute home. At least I will be making on the mileage and I could even take the scenic route. ;)

You're the one who wants to fleece the taxpayer by expecting us to pay for your travel from home to 1st appointment which is less than you travelling to your office which in turn saves you a tidy sum in commuting costs and if you had your way (post 1) would be completely funded by the taxpayer!!

Couple of things.... you'd be paying your own home to office fuel and it would be in your own time. The same for office back home. The impact is far greater for you.

As to taking the scenic route, I'd hope that your line manager checks regularly to make sure the claims are credible... It's super easy to check route milage using a whole load of route finders on the net.

Cooking the books whilst in public office is fraud... and you could lose your job and pension just for what? Greed in claiming a few extra miles?

Guys, I was taking a leaf out of your book and being sarcastic. Didn't expect to hook a couple that quick!

I think the issue here is what constitutes my office. If I visit a location one mile away more frequently than the office 15 miles away, the LA could easily call it my office. I think that would be fairer anyway.

You can't have two bases. If you believe that you are more often at one location for the benefit of your employer (rather than because you can then claim more travel costs), then it is something to take up with them. It is not a case of 'easily calling it your office' though as there are rules around it.

And the next post if you do get your employer to class you as a home worker will be
'Why can I only claim £x for using my home to work from. I'm saving my employer a lot more than that. It's so unfair!'

If you worked from the office, then you would be spending for arguments sake, 20 mins travelling each way. You are saving yourself these 40 mins time (which is far more valuable) per day ont op of the normal working milege, and are in no way out of pocket anyway. If the 'site' is only 5 miles away from home, then you have saved the travelling time, and are 10 miles 'in credit' on fuel that you have agreed to pay by accepting the position in the first place.

Not only are they right, but I think the rule is perfectly fair. Suck it up.
