Laptop Pointer won't move when charger plugged in

Hello.
I have a Dell Inspriron N5110 Laptop.
About two months ago I bought a non-original replacement charger.
All of a sudden when the charger is plugged in the touch pad pointer won't move or does so erratically.
It does charge the battery.
Soon as the charger is unplugged everything back to normal.
I'm assuming it has to be the charger but I wonder why it went alright for 2 months. If it was a voltage issue I would have though that it would have showed up straightaway.
Son has just told me thta the same thing happened with the original Dell charger. I've always it unplugged so didn't notice.
Any ideas, thanks.
