Thanks, if nothing else I just want an easy way of keeping track/having a reminder where I am in the month. I shall report back :)

Still not sure what to do about my savings but I figure it can wait until this month is over at least :)

  • Another YNAB fan here. In 2 months I have gone from being constantly between £200 and £500 overdrawn on payday, to being £400 in credit today (payday is on Monday) AND I bought a £200 TV last week. No idea where it all used to go! YNAB is Amazing.

I too have created an account that solely deals with DD's but how do I move the date they are paid? Do I have to contact the other person and they make the change?

I just wanted to bump this to say thank you again. I've been doingmy budget for only four days but I can already see I'd not been including two bills in my calendar (so not accounted for) and I'm already seeing where I'm going wrong.

I'm a bit worried about what else I'm going to find but YNAB is perfect for what I needed. I will update at the end of the month to share how I got on but thanks x

Once you have made all reasonable provisions for your monthly expenses, it becomes relatively easy to manage, requiring just a few minutes work once a week. As I explained in various other posts (links above), if you piggy bank with various different accounts, the issue becomes one of not keeping plates spinning, but merely watching one or two plates whilst letting the others spin themselves. For instance, I know that next years car tax is taken care of because I budget money from account to deal with it - as long as I dont touch that money, car tax is not a plate I need to watch anymore. I do need to watch the monthly food spend to stay on target, likewise, the petrol, but beyond that, the rest just takes care of itself. Once you are on a stable footing, you can start to make long range plans to provision for the less common emergencies like boilers breaking etc. All I really have to remember is which colour card to use for which category of spending - I already know there is enough money to cover most eventualities. This is where you need to be and where YNAB will help you to be in approximately 3 or so months time when you have rolled through several pay days and got the hang of it. Once you do, you'll wonder why you didnt do it sooner.

  • I find it useful to have various 'savings pots'.
i have created these online by opening 4 e-saving accounts for things like water, christmas, car etc. I can then transfer a small amount over each month and build these pots up for when the bills arrive.
Great way to have an emergency fund.
