Melting chocolate in Microwave.

Options
Has anyone had a problem melting chocolate in the microwave?
I put some cooking chocolate from Mr A - stated - can be melted in microwave - in a MW bowl - nearly blew up the Microwave. The MW made an awful noise after a few seconds! There was a burning smell and I have a burn mark on the inside panel now. My microwave is still under guarantee.
Tried the MW with a MW cup of water - works okay. However I am concerned about the burn mark. Advice please.
( I melted the chocolate - old style - in a bowl over a pan of water on cooker top )

How strange; I've never had a problem, I always melt chocolate in the MW, in a pyrex flat-bottomed jug; and I've used cooking choc from Tesc0, M0rries, @sda and @ldi. You didn't get choc flavoured stuff did you? It's often right beside the actual cooking choc in the home baking aisle. It's the only thing I can think of offhand.

I've never had a problem either - even the choc flavour stuff will melt
The "strange noises" and "burn mark" sound like metal was put in the microwave - you did unwrap it from it's foil didn't you? What about the bowl you used?

This happened to me once, but it was because the tiniest piece of the foil wrapper was still attached to the chocolate. You could hardly see it but clearly the microwave didn't like it.

    It is definitely chocolate.

Yes - chocolate was taken out of wrapper and the bowl was a microwave bowl - small size but same as I cook my vegetables in.

Well I certainly didn't see any foil wrapper in with the chocolate.
What happened to your microwave - was it still usable or did you have to replace it?

Yeah, may have been a microwave error.
Don't focus too much on the chocolate aspect as chocolate doesn't make microwaves blow up.

This happens to me sometimes. The chocolate is really cold so the microwaves bounce off it. Try putting a bowl of water underneath the bowl of chocolate ensuring that some water is exposed so the microwaves have somewhere to be absorbed.

If your MW is under guarantee I would return it and get it replaced.

  • Never had a problem with melting chocolate in any m/wave I've had, even when it has been quite cold. I do only put it in for 20 second bursts though (as I'm never melting a great deal, probably only 50g) & stir it well between each blasting. No idea if that makes a difference though....
& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin :D
