It's wonderful to add our story to this inspiring message board. It's been a source of aspiration and motivation as we've navigated our mortgage freedom journey.
- Date that we decided to become mortgage free
- Soon after purchasing our first home at the end of 2012. My wife grew up with a parent who hid credit card debt and the ramifications left a long lasting impact so it was important to us that we were proactive in reducing the monthly cost to ensure we felt secure.
- Mortgage debt at its highest
- ยฃ250k after moving to our forever home in early 2020
- Mortgage freedom date
- Today!
- Your one pearl of wisdom
- Keep your goal in mind and allow the motivations behind it to evolve as life progresses. With our first two year fix, we had to call the bank to make an overpayment. It became something that I oddly enjoyed doing each month to find out how much our payment would reduce by. After our daughter arrived, the motivation evolved to being able to use the interest savings from overpaying to provide her with more opportunities and experiences as she grows up.
- Oh, and don't forget to say "yes" to the odd expensive opportunity that life presents as time goes on so that becoming mortgage free doesn't become the journey and remains part of the journey.
- The guides that helped you
- Mortgage overpayment calculators helped us understand the potential savings at the start but once our understanding was there, this forum became an inspiring place to spend a few minutes here and there.
Best of luck to all those on their journey, I hope these words can help inspire in the same way that so many others here have us over the years. It's definitely worthwhile doing ๐
