We think ourselves as extremely fortunate as both only in late 40's at the time we became mortgage free.
We knew paying off the mortgage with hubbys redundancy was better than putting it into savings. After all we could live off beans on toast if he didn't get another job, as long as the kids and us had a roof over our head.
Luckily for us he found anothe full time job by the end of the January.1 -

At first I made a note of the monthly interest then just aimed to clear the interest each month. But as interest rates in savings fell I split any spare money into both the mortgage and savings I never stopped saving and as a result I have savings and no mortgage rather than clear it off earlier.
good luck to every one else on their quest.1 -
Well done MFs!
I'm counting the months now until ours is paid off which should be before Xmas, all being well.
We enquired with the bank how we'd have to pay off the last chunk, i.e., would we need to arranage a meeting, sign loads of paperwork etc. sadly no, they said just transfer the money by bank transfer and they'll do the rest. Takes the fun out of it!
Well we'll still be celebrating this Xmas anyway!1 -
