NHS Starting salary

Hi,


I've recently had an interview for a job with the NHS as band 6 (health promotion not clinical). My current salary is approx. £1500 above the band 6 starting salary. Is there any scope for negotiating starting salary or would I automatically be appointed at the bottom of the band?


I worked for a different NHS board for 4 years and while I was a band 5 then, I was on point 21 (which is the starting salary for a band 6). I have been in the voluntary sector for a year now and I was wondering, if offered the band 6, I could negotiate starting at point 23 (which is the same as my current salary)?


I might not even get offered the job (they're still interviewing today) - but I just wanted to be prepared if I do!

    You can always ask, and if they want you enough they might be open to negotiation.

    But if your current employment is non NHS, and your previous NHS employment was long enough ago. HR may simply follow policy and bring you in on band 6, point 1.

    Are you also aware that the increment system is under some debate at present as well?

    Thanks, I suspect they'll go the bottom of the scale route.


    Hmm no I wasn't aware that it was in debate...in a good or a bad way?

    in a 'we might lose it' way! i tried to negotitiate when i joined but wouldn't they budge from point 1

    I'd wait until you are offered the post, and then raise the fact you are currently receiving above the bottom of the payscale, if they want you there is every chance they will move you up a point so you aren't losing out financially.

    Depending on your confidence, and how much you want the post, there is always scope for further negotiation. We once offered a post to an applicant, who turned it down, then rang back later saying they would accept it if the salary was higher. Took some balls, but they got what they asked for.

    Pay scales are being debated again, with discussion around whether the increment should be given automatically, or should it be based on performance. Pretty sure they would like to scrap increments altogether, and move to regional pay scales, but that is another debate.
