paid two months in arrears?

Hi this is my first post and I'm not sure if it's in the right place.
Basically I started a new job on the 6th of March and was fully expecting to get some pay at the end of march. I was called by my boss today and told I won't get paid for this month until the 1st of May? Now this a) confused me as I had never been in this situation before. And b) annoyed me as I have only been informed of this now.
I know I will get the a months pay a month after I leave but this doesn't help me now. Is working for 8 weeks without pay a normal situation?
Thanks

Ask them when payroll cut-off is - sometimes it can be that early in the month. Have to say, I think that is a bit too long. Perhaps broach the subject of an advance paid end of this month to be trued up in the April payroll?*** Thank you for your consideration ***0

They didn't mention cut off. Threw around alot of information about how other employees are getting paid for Feb on the 1st of april and so on. I am so out of my depth with how payroll works as it's a small business who has someone do their payroll for them. So I'm literally clueless0

If it's a small business, they will give to accountant to do who will log in via a portal and complete this. Paying that late to me indicates cash flow problems. Ask them the questions and say you cannot work that much in lieu, but be prepared if they bite back. It's a rubbish situation.*** Thank you for your consideration ***0

No it's not normal , we pay for hours worked between the 19th of one month to the 18th on the following month and pay a few days later on the 24th that's for 36 employees , with several different rates of pay , so it's perfectly possible to have a quick turn roundVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -
I'm not one for asking questions like that I fear for my job as I'm generally not considered the most employable person due to my lack of qualifications and poor work history due to health. I just find it hard to be motivated to work when the light at the end of the tunnel is incredibly far away. I could deal with only getting a week or two due to cut off etc but waiting almost two months is going to be a huge struggle for me and my partner.0

Some employers do do this, calling it working a month in hand. I would call it working TWO months in hand!
Anyway, if they do it, they do it. Your problem is that it leaves you short this month. I suggest you try talking to your employer, saying that this is causing you a real problem, especially as you knew nothing about this unusual arrangement until today. Ask if an advance on salary is possible to enable you to keep coming into work, and eating, until the actual payday!
It may be worth asking on the benefits board about any benefits that are available in this situation (I wouldn't hold your breath, but it's worth asking!) if you have come off benefits when starting this job.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
Problem is if I ask for an advance I will be out of pocket next month and as my hours vary as do my partners I am unsure if we will be up the Creek without a paddle next month. It's one of those catch 22s I guess0

It sounds as if they pay one month in arrears but you have missed the cut off date by a few days.
If the boss had said timesheets should be submitted on the 28th of the month and payday is the last day of the month that would sound completely normal to me. I have always been paid one month in arrears it is just because payday is the first of the month that it sounds odd.
Seven weeks without pay is very hard however and I would speak to your boss to see if there is anyway you can get two weeks pay. It should be perfectly possible for them to do a one-off payment or to write you a cheque.0
