Why haven't you put an option in your poll for ........ rubbish don't do it .
Can't say what Edinburgh is like but i drove a Cab for over 25yrs, when i bought my plate they were like hens teeth, i advertised a few times and nobody was selling at any price 'cos you could earn such a good living. Now they almost give the plates away in lucky bags, nobody wants them 'cos the living isn't there these days.
I eventually managed to buy one from a guy who was retiring and paid £17.5k just for the plate, needed to buy a Cab on top of that, a couple of years earlier i'd paid that for my house. But other drivers kept telling me, don't worry what it costs, think of it as a pension it will always keep going up. I'm not sure what they go for today, perhaps £4/£5k. That tells you what you can expect to earn and the hours you're going to work.
If you fancy working on the taxi, buy a decent car and do Private Hire, at least you've got your car.

  • You would make no where near that kind of money.

Even with your own Black Cab?
  • Why do the answers (spelt incorrectly) not match the question?

If you're determined to have a go and don't know any of the drivers enough that they'll tell you the truth as to what you can expect to earn, then the best option would be, get yourself a badge (licence) and arrange with a Cab owner to be a settle driver. A settle driver rents for just days; just nights, or long collar when you have the Cab to yourself. There are probably a couple of fleet owners near to you or you may get a better deal from an owner wanting a nightman 'cos he does days himself. Call or call-in to a couple of the radio offices for Cabs in your area they'll know someone looking for a driver.
After 6mths you can decide then whether to buy and you've only cost that bit of rent.

    Update,
Even better idea. Don't pack your job in but try being a settle driver doing nights and weekends, or your holidays, just to test it out.

Wheni first started i was on the dole, i didn't want to sign-off just in case i never took to it and had trouble signing on again. After a couple of weeks i picked a woman up one night and while driving i was trying to remember who she was, i knew i knew her face. Next time i went to sign-on she was the girl at the next counter, She looked at me and i looked at her and i said ........ I'm working i've come to sign-off and she just smiled.
