Price War?

Options
The press has been full of this price war morrison's is starting. Has anyone seen any indication of it yet? It's supposed to be the most ruthless slashing of prices ever seen but I haven't noticed anything... Although Asda put broccoli down from 60 p to 50 p. I'm glad but...it doesn't seem world shaking.

Am I missing something ( I don't buy processed foods, so I might be) or has it just not started yet? Or is a price war just when they knock a couple of pence off a few products?

Maybe "price war" is newspaper talk for - Morrisons might have to reduce some prices a bit if they want to compete . . .

Morrisons local to me are more expensive than Tesco and Asda so a price war would certainly be of benefit to me, here's hoping.

I went to a Morrisons for the first time on Friday. Found three items cheaper than Tesco/Lidl.....Pasta twirls at 29p for 500g, pineapples 74p and vinegar 21p. Dried milk powder was just over £2 for 400g whereas Sains is just over £1 for the same size.
The bulk unwashed potatoes were cheap at £3.49 for 12.5kg.but farm gate prices ( on a Sunday trip )were £5.50 for 25kg.
  • I think morrisons profits have been falling as a result of competition with Aldi and Lidl and they've said they will aggressively cut prices as a response. The Guardian, Telegraph and Daily Mail all reported that the Big Four would have to follow suit - but these reports are several weeks old now and I've not seen any lowering of prices.

Then I wondered what actually constituted a price war. If it's 20 p off some coca cola or pot noodles, it's not much good to me- I would like to see reductions on fruit or fish which have become incredibly expensive. So I wondered if people who did buy processed foods had seen any reductions, or if anyone had seen any further reports on a price war start date...its of great interest to me, I really want cheaper food :o

I haven't noticed any real price reductions, but.............

Asda have adverts on the radio about prices that are down and staying down, I think they call them "locked down prices", they also advertise on TV items which are cheaper at Asda than Tesco, saying "You are better off at Asda".

My local Tesco has a board outside advertising prices that are down and staying down and Morrisons has the same.

I went to Morrisons intending to just buy the sack of potatoes and a couple of other things and then go on to Aldi for my other fruit and veg. However, Morrisons had three for £2 on
apples and oranges and three for £1.50 on carrots and onions which were all on my list. Bananas are the same price anyway, so I ended up doing all my shopping there and leaving Aldi. I really didn't expect to be doing that. It was more of a top up shop than a big shop but saved me time and I don't think cost me anymore than I would have spent this time. There were a few things that I had on my list that I left as they cost more - passata being one, but I didn't need it yet so not a problem. The others that I can't even think what they were now, I didn't need either, they were just things that I usually buy in Aldi. I think it is still very much swings and roundabouts.

I heard an advert for Sainsbury's today with a number of vegetable items for 69p, sounded so much like Aldi Super6 to me.

What I find odd is that Sainsbury's have acquired some land directly opposite our Aldi. It won't be a huge store so just a local. I'm wondering if that's to make the (ever decreasing) top up shop after Aldi even easier and guarantee that we do it in Sainsbury's!;)
