Where can an OAP bus pass be used?

Options
…..And don't say 'on the bus' :D:D

My dad has just qualified for an OAP buss pass which allows him travel on local buses up in Manchester.
If he visits London, would he be able to use his bus pass on London buses? If so, is this unique to London, or can he basically travel on any bus in the country so long as it's a 'normal' bus and not a long distance National Express type bus?

I have tried to google and have got myself more confused than when I started!

Thanks in advance.

These are the conditions for my area
What your bus pass entitles you to

Holders of an English National Concessionary Bus Pass issued by the Cheshire Consortium are entitled to the following concessions.
On journeys starting in Cheshire West and Chester, Halton or Warrington:
    • Monday - Friday between 9.30am and last bus: Free fare
    • Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday: Free fare
On journeys starting in Cheshire East:
    • Monday - Friday before 9.30am: Half fare
    • Monday - Friday between 9.30am and last bus: Free fare
    • Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday: Free fare
These same concessions apply to bus services going into Wales providing the journey starts or ends in Cheshire boundary.

    In the rest of England:
    • Monday - Friday between 9.30am - 11pm: free fare
    • Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday: free fare
There may be scheme differences for England, Wales, Scotland & NI but basically a bus pass issued in England gives free travel with certain restrictions anywhere in England

I was told that you can use the bus pass on London buses at any time. On some buses, you can just touch in. But you can't do that on London buses. I was told by a London bus driver to touch in and nothing happened.

!!!!!!, thanks for that info… I looked up a phrase from your post, and have now called Greater Manchester Transport. They have confirmed that the OAP bus passes (or whatever more PC name they are called) are for use on any local bus service in England…so that is local as in busses around the town where you are at that moment, not local to your home address.

    From TFL web site
Concessionary bus passes from outside London
If you've got a National Concessionary pass from an English council outside London you can use it at any time on buses in London displaying this roundel-small-buses.gifsymbol.

That's because despite the driver telling you, you don't need to touch in. Just show the pass.

He may or may not be inclined to press a button to record 'a' journey, but that's not your problem
  • I've used my bus pass in London oodles of time - just wave it at the driver !

Can be used on Blackpool trams but not on Nottingham ones, unless you live in nottingham.

That's now got me wondering. I've got my Welsh bus pass and know I can use it on any bus in Wales.

The thought hadn't even crossed my mind as to whether I might not be allowed to use it on buses before 9.30am in the morning.

Does anyone know the position on this? I am in a pretty rural-ish area of Wales and there just ARENT many buses and I therefore assume that time restrictions wouldn't apply here, even if they would in somewhere as urban as Cardiff for instance (if only because of all the restrictions we have anyway, due to the limited number of buses).

Hence, in somewhere like Cardiff (with enough buses) I'd expect there might be some time restrictions, but in an area like this (where it's all you can do to find a bus going at the time you have decided to use one anyway) then they wouldn't apply iyswim.

EDIT: That just prompted a quick google and I've answered my own question. I found a Welsh Government website that said "can travel free at any time of day". Whew! Relief. Commonsense about that lack of buses has prevailed and we can use any of them.

I heard something about the Essex pass only being valid after 9.30 (half fare before), but the Hertfordshire one always being free with at least one company.

Until April then they are stopping it. You will have to use the bus that runs alongside it.
