Where do you buy fish from??

Random Supermarket test found 5/12 samples were pass best or off! (sour)

I tend to buy frozen from Iceland as hope it's fresher than Supermarket counter/pre-packed.

The clip does not tell the whole story. I saw the whole programme, the supermarket fish were bought on the use by date but they didn't say if the man was testing them on that day. The supermarkets were not told why they were buying the fish, but the independent fishmonger was told in advance, and I bet he gave them the freshest fih he had in the shop.

Also it was just his opinion (although it was claimed he was an expert), he didn't do any scientific tests on the fish, just microwaved them and tasted them.

I remember laughing at him as he opened on box, examined the fish, sniffed it, cooked it then took a bite and spat it out in surprise declaring it was off.

If it was off he should have known this long before he cooked it.

He also gave all the fish a score out of ten which meant they were edible.

IMO the programme was designed to show fish bought from an independent fish monger was better and fresher than than supermarket fish. They showed a fish monger who bought fish and had it on sale within two hours, then said "it could take up to two weeks for fish to get onto the shelves in a supermarket"

I think testing supermarket fish, on it's use by date against fish monger fish landed that day was grossly unfair.

I didn't see the programme but I do buy fish literally 'off the boat' and there is no comparison between it and the dull eyed, dried-out stuff I see in the supermarkets.

If fish is landed, sent for processing, shipped to a supermarket's central distribution facility then shipped again to the store, how fresh can it be? It might be safe, it might be deemed be edible, but fresh?

Not everyone can have access to really fresh fish, it's true, but the product on sale in the supermarkets (even the best ones) is hardly ever really fresh, simply because of the way it is processed and distributed. In many cases, I'd rather by frozen than the stuff sold on even a Waitrose fish counter.

A worthy successor to "Tickwoof" and the "Ginger Winger" it seems.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

I used to specially make a trip to Hastings to stock up on fish when I lived in London.Since retiring to live just outside Sittingbourne I now drive to Whitstable around 20 minutes away and the fish are almost still jumping on the slabs at the fish market there and are very fresh indeed.I must admit unless it was prefrozen i.e. birds eye or similar I think I might think twice before I bought from the supermarket although I did buy a whole salmon last year from Sainsbobs on a Saturday afternoon and it was Huge and the fish chap topped and tailed it for me and fillited it so I had around 15 steaks from it .He had just reduced it from £25.00 down to £12.50 so I had quite a good bargain in my fish.I love finny haddock with a poched egg on top but its got so expensive I just can't see the justification in buying it.I am lucky as well that there is a wet-fish shop in my village and his stuff is very good .He gets the most amazing Dover sole's at times and they are well worth paying a little bit more for them.I love fish and one of my favourites is a trout wrapped in foil and the insides stuffed with mushrooms and nuts and cooked with a smidgen of butter and lots of fresh ground black pepper.A cold glass of pinot grigio and I am a very happy lady :):):)

With a name like yours I'd thought you'd be catching your own  :rotfl:

Do you think you get what fish you ask for @ your chippie? Some slip in a cheaper fish sub.

Even that varies enormously. A new F&C shop opened in a small town near me about a year ago and the quality is as good as I've ever tasted. Why? because they use fresh oil daily and filter it frequently, but mostly because because the owner buys fresh fish from a local fish merchant about two miles away, who gets it straight off the boats. He doesn't do what too many do - buy frozen portions in bulk from Brake Bros!

Yesterday, as an experiment, I braved Sainsbury's F&C in one of their cafes. Let's just say there was absolutely no comparison!
