Surveys and nuisance calls?

I've been registered with the Telephone Preference Service for years, as I hate unwanted sales calls. It has mostly worked well, but recently I've seen a huge increase in these calls again, and now get several a day.
I always make a point of asking the companies how they got my number (before informing them I'm registered with TPS and am going to file a complaint!). The recent ones all seem to say 'We got your number from a survey you completed'.
I just wondered if anyone on here has any thoughts about whether nuisance calls can result from registering with survey sites, or whether anyone else has had this kind of experience. I am on a few survey sites (just the main ones that folk do on here - OnePoll, Valued Opinions, Crowdology etc). To be honest I can't remember if any of them asked for my number at sign-up, but I'm always careful not to give permission for third parties to contact me, and I don't give out my landline in any surveys.
My gut feeling is that the 'survey' line is just an excuse being used by unscrupulous companies who do the cold calling, rather than admit that they bought a dodgy list of numbers.

I never give my real phone number. They dont need it for a survey or offer you complete online.
Anyone trying to phone the number I give for offers will be dialling a fax number. They can try to pester the fax machine if they like!0 -
We have the same. People phoning for surveys or wanting money. they get as far as the first few words before I put the phone down.
When the years upfront phone line rental is up in June, I am thinking of cancelling the house phone. It is hardly used to make any calls. Every one has a mobile phone here. The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0 -
We often get several nuisance calls a day but I don't participate in survey sites.0
