Many UK businesses already struggle to find suitable UK graduates for example Engineers.
The issue is the degree.
Not surprising few want to do engineering. It is seen as poorly paid, in relation to the effort, responsibility relative to the rewards in other "clean" environments.
Real apprenticeships could help bridge the gap but that requires investment by the firms themselves."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Doesn't seem much of a plan in any event.
Perhaps universities should peddle their "degrees" independently and take payment, based on success of the UK graduates they produce, over their economic life time. It would be interesting to see how long some would last.
you are, as usual, wrong0 -

Which bit?
You not liking state planning - if that is what the student funding fiasco is.
You liking free enterprise - must be room in there for some private equity firms, must plenty of assets to go at."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

surely the companies who will benefit from their staff having a degree should bear some of the costs ,so for instance if you study a science and then go and work for a multi billion£ pharmacutical company why shouldn't they cough up some cash for your knowledge
They do. I studied computer science and my company pays me for my skills and knowledge, which includes what I learnt at university.Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Blackwhite bellyfeel double plus good...0
