Good alternative to Jergens - not too feminine

Hello,
I work in a job where my hands get exposed to cardboard (seems to really dry my hands out), the wind, rain, etc. and as a result, I suffer from dry skin.
I've tried a few different things, including vaseline (bit slippery), lip moisturiser ("moisturiser's all the same, right?"), and Aquoeus cream (my doctor prescribed suggested it ages ago for a rash. Worked ok on that, but not sure it makes much difference on my hands).

The thing that seemed to work quite well is Jergens Ultra Healing hand cream. It's not too smelly, and while it's quite sticky/greasy initially, this aspect wears off in a few minutes and isn't too bad then. Feels more... powdery...then. Like you've applied talc, except it doesn't rub off.

I've been struggling to buy it recently. First it went up from what I think was £1.50 when I first bought it, to more than £3 per 75ml.
Next it became very difficult to find (Asda used to sell it, but now the only place I can find it is through Ocado at 3.49/75ml).
And now, a bit of digging and Jergens' website says:
"We can confirm that the decision has been made to withdraw Jergens from the UK Market and we offer our apologies for taking away your favourite product.
We regret to inform you that we have no remaining stock within the UK."

I thought I'd take a look at Jergens' ingredients, and find something else that has the same(ish) ingredients and try that, but it's made from a list of chemicals so long I can't make head nor tail of which bits are important.

Can anyone suggest a good alternative hand cream that is a bit more widely available? Is there one miracle cream that a lot of you are using?

I don't mind where I buy it from really (although supermarket is preferable), but I'd like something that doesn't contain glitter/sparkly stuff, or have an overwhelming smell of lavender so strong that even after I've washed them, I still can't use my hands to eat sandwiches for the next three days :D
(To be clear, nothing that smells of lavender. If they must smell of something, maybe doughnuts?)

You could look at Aveeno; it's the only thing that helps DH's very dry skin. It's currently on offer at Boots. Not cheap, but sounds like you need something that really works.

I like handcreams with lanolin in, or you can get Nivea pots in the £ shop. Gloves might help you too.

  • My advice would be to stock up on what you know works for you. 'Savers' was still selling Jergens when I was last in there. Search on their site for your closest shop http://www.savers.co.uk/index.html

Otherwise I second the Bodyshop Hemp hand protector, usually about £10, currently on sale for £5. My hubby uses this when we can get it on sale, he is outdoors a lot and his fingertips split and bleed if he doesn't use something everyday. He has also used Neutrogena Norwegian hand cream. Supposed to be based on Norwegian fishermans cream. It is unscented. There is also Palmer's cocoa butter for men, comes in a grey bottle. Both available in Bodycare, both about £5 or under.

There's also a cream called 'Aveeno'. My dad had horribly dry skin when he had chemo, and he was prescribed this. but you can also buy it in Home Bargains and Body Care and a few other discount shops.

    Hope that helps.

  • I had very dry hands which kept cracking and bleeding (due to pet allergies and washing them too much) and my allergy nurse recommended Atrixo intensive protection cream (the turquoise pot not the regular green and yellow one)- I have used it for many years every since that recommendation! I've found the cheapest is Amazon- the price is currently £3.44 (add on price) for 200ml but it goes up and down- I got 5 pots for £2.40 each last year!

Superdrug also have it on offer for £3.44 for the 200ml pot

I have hands that are very prone to dry skin and have found this to be really good & it doesn't smell too feminine imho!

    http://www.wilko.com/hand-and-foot-care/wilko-skin-therapy-intensive-q10-hand+nail-cream-75ml/invt/0296227

It works on mine loads better than many of the other skincare brands that cost way more. It's 59p for 75ml and often 2 for £1

They do 2 in the same range just make sure you get the INTENSIVE one not Nourishing as it is a lot better and richer.

You have to put it on sparingly at first rather than a big dollop or it doesn't rub in well. But you soon get used to it!

I've fallen in love with l'occitane hand cream it soaks on straight away and is definitely non greasy the ones I have are all flowery smelling but you can get Shea butter which is non flowery lol

It is pricy though at £8 for a mini tube but could be worth it if it saves your hands
