Local government super annuation pension

Hey everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone out there can help. We've had some very unfortunate news about a member of my family and they have asked some advice. I'm not too clued up on financial legalities and know this forum has provided good advice in the past.

My family member has been diagnosed with a terminal disease and has now begun taking care of financial matters. He currently has a local government super annuation pension, a cash ISA of 23k and premium bonds of 7k. He is worried about leaving his wife behind with a bleak financial outlook after mortgage costs and wanted to ensure the best possible outcome for her.

She is currently receiving a high rate disability payment after working many years. Would the transfer of the government super annuation pension to her play a part in how much his wife paid? Also, if transferring the bonds and ISA, could that also have a negative impact on the disabiltiy payment?

Any advice would be appreciated so I can maybe shine though some "good news" in bad times,

Cheers

Is he an active member or the LGPS ie still paying in?

If so, death in service benefits can be better than ill health tier 1 and then a death grant as the spouses pension is the same for both.

You will need to see if three times his actual salary is more than ten times his annual pension + lump sum
  • Thanks for the reply DRP. I'm afraid that went over my head...I really am ignorant when it comes to pensions/payments etc... I will ask him this tomorrow and reply with the answers.

    Cheers

Basically you can be at three stages,

Active member = Still working there, paying in.

Deferred member = No longer working there, but also not receiving the pension

Pensioner = Retired, receiving the pension.

The death benefits are different in each scenario,

It depends what this "disability payment" is. If it's disability living allowance or attendance allowance then it is not affected by any other income she has.
  • Cheers guys

Ill post back with the needed information. Informative as ever! :)
