Mortgage fees - when to pay?

I am expecting to go forward with a mortgage from Natwest, and this mortgage has a ~£1k fee. The mortgage is a 5yr fix.
It makes most financial sense (as far as i can see), to pay this fee upfront, and not to add it to the mortgage. However, i am somewhat nervous about the house i'm trying to buy (it has longish chain) that i'd quite like to not have this upfront cost. I've already gone through one attempted house purchase which lost me a few £k.
One idea i've had would be to add the fee to the mortgage, but overpay in the first year to reduce the mortgage down.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

It makes no difference if you do it properly

Yes i guess it's fairly obvious isn't it

Money isn't really a massive problem, so like you say, put the £1k into the deposit and add the fee to the mortgage.
It's just about reducing the risk of being out of pocket if the purchase falls through.0
