Cheap gym advice? Council gyms now run by Better??

Options
Hi folks,

I'm looking to join a local gym (I live in London E11) and I'd love your advice.

Normally I'd have thought that the council run gyms were cheaper but it seems as if all the local council leisure services have been outsourced to Better. http://www.better.org.uk/

What I'd like is a gym with cardio machines, weights, a pool, steam room and sauna. For as little as possible (of course). I'm likely to go fairly regularly (2/3 times per week).

Advice please (and tips for haggling etc would be great too.)

I'm currently using a free LA Fitness 5 day pass for a gym in the centre of town but I'd like something closer to home if I can get a decent enough deal. Any idea how much I should expect to pay?

"Better" is Greenwich Leisure Limited and appear to run most if not all of Hackney sports facilities. Looks to be just about reasonable fees depending on what you want. I do think the days of the cheapo council facilities are long gone. There's a Payasugo gym in E11 which seems reasonable

GLL run around 120 leisure centres nationwide, not just ones in London. They recently took over all the Everyone Active (SLM) centres too.

You won't find many council run leisure centres nowadays as the funding just isn't available. The remaining few, including the ones I currently use, are either merging with other private companies or selling out completely to private ventures such as SLM and GLL.
