Adding Interest to an already defaulted debt

Hi there. First time posting so please be gentle! I have an outstanding default with a well known debt collector for £1150 which I regrettably ignored for too long. 3 months ago, a pack arrives from Northampton County Court advising me that a solicitors firm working on behalf of said debt agency is seeking a CCJ for nearly £1900. I called solicitors and they said it was costs (OK) and over £700 in interest!
I spoke to debt agency and they said that all they were after was the £1150 but they couldn't bring the debt back "in-house" for vague reasons. Went back to solicitors and they wouldn't budge so long story short I'm 3 months into paying £300 per month (which is crippling me but staving off the CCJ).
Advice please, can I stop the direct debit after the 4th payment and take my chances with the court on the basis that I have a recent letter from debt agency showing the amount I owe?
