The big debt debate

Just watching the debate on channel 5 and they carried out a survey on unsecured debt. Apparently 50% of people owe less than £1000!!! wow. I owed over 30K at my worst

Is my highest level of debt really so unusual?

Over 50% of people are liars according to some other statistic.

I just wish they'd get the bl**dy Katie Hopkins off these debates, she adds nothing & is responsible for most of my friends not watching.

Shame because it would have been an interesting debate if she was not on it.:(

  • I was going to watch until the first person I say was Katie Hopkins. It was never going to be a credible show at that point so I watched Shetland from last week, far more calming.

Yes, I'd say that it is pretty unusual. So far as I know, none of my friends or family have unsecured debt beyond this month's credit card bill which will be paid off in full each month.

There are still a great many people in the country who will not borrow money other than for the purposes of a mortgage.

As much as i agree with you (I don't like her either), the fact of the matter is she gets people talking and, more importantly to the broadcasting companies, she gets people watching.

It's the society we live in. People ENJOY being offended. It always makes me laugh how many people go out of their way to watch something that they know will offend them just so that they can complain about it afterwards. I fear for every one of your friends that turn off because of her, there'll be 10 other people that tune in because of her too.

But, while she brings in audiences, they'll continue to put her on panels.

Exactly! Same here. If I don't have the money, I don't spend it.

I think it depends which statistics you are looking at, and who is conducting them.

Having read many stories on here, I honestly do not think you are that unusual. What is unusual and admirable is that you are dealing with it. Well done :)

I complete agree with you cassman!

Drama always draws people in, since it serves as a distraction from one's life problems. This I have noticed by receiving the most comments on my more challenging and controversial posts on here.

Apart from her loud voice, she does not bring anything meaningful to the table. In fact she reminds me of a church bell: very loud, but hollow inside!

Debt is relative though, £1000 is a lot of debt to somebody on minimum wage, but it's a drop in the ocean to somebody on 50K PA.

I still think it's wrong to label it as an amount of debt, it would be much more realistic to show it as a % of household income.
