Icecream without a I cream maker

Thinking of having a go at making my own icecream, as the icecream man must come by about 3 times a day, more on weekends, and you can only say no to the kids so many times before caving in.
We do buy cheap lollies and icecream from Aldi and Farmfoods, but would like to have a go as using fruit to make our own.
Is it possible to make icecream without a maker, and how easy/hard is it to get it right and is there any special ingredients I need?

Ice-cream is basically frozen custard and you can make it as rich and therefore more expensive as you like by using cream or just use milk. You can make it using bought custard if you want.
To make it all you need to do is make a custard (google 'custard recipe' and/or 'ice-cream recipe' here's an example:http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/realvanillaicecream_14294 ) and then cool it, put it into a tupperware, freeze it for a couple of hours, take it out of the freezer, give it a good mix to break down any ice crystals which might have formed then re-freeze.

ice cream without a machine is mainly a matter of hard work doing the beating every two or three hours, but some ingredients can be included which seem to make the formation of large ice crystals less of a problem

If you mix condensed milk with double cream and add flavouring of choice you just freeze it without beating as the condensed milk stops the crystalising. Not particularly cheap ingredeiants though and I've nly ever made it with chopped up choc bars so not healthy either.0

Try this ...
ICE CREAM
Makes approx. 500ml to 750ml
INGREDIENTS
300ml carton of double cream
400g tin of condensed milk
METHOD
Put the cream into a bowl. Whisk until it resembles clotted cream.
Gently stir in the condensed milk.
Gently stir in any flavouring (see below).
Put the contents into a shallow dish.
Put the dish in the freezer.
Every hour or so, move the frozen bits at the edge of the dish into the middle. After 4 hours, it should all be frozen.
ADDITIONS & ALTERNATIVES
Pour some chocolate sauce on top.
Coconut ice cream. Substitute a 400ml tin of coconut milk for the double cream. Mix it thoroughly with the condensed milk.
Malteser ice cream. Put a small bag of Maltesers in the freezer until they are frozen and brittle. Make a small hole in the bag. With a rolling pin or any other blunt object, hit the bag until the Maltesers are completely broken up. Stir in the Malteser bits before freezing or scatter them over the top after serving.
Peanut ice cream. Add half a jar of crunchy peanut butter.
“Snickers” ice cream. Add half a jar of crunchy peanut butter and a tablespoon of caramel or toffee ice cream sauce. Top with chocolate sauce.
Strawberry ice cream. Liquidise and add 450g of strawberries.
Vanilla ice cream. Cut a vanilla pod open lengthways and scrape out seeds. Boil the pod and seeds in 100ml of milk. Leave to cool. Remove the pod. Add the milk and seeds.If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?
