To flip this round, I could have been your son. I didn't get £6k in debt but I did miss payments on my credit card, borrow from payday lenders and get myself into a bit of a mess.
The best thing that happened to me was when I realised I couldn't pay my rent one month and had no option but to talk to my parents, having been burying my head in the sand for months.
They paid the rent, paid off the payday loans but told me I'd have to sort the credit card out myself. We agreed how much I would repay them each month and I had to change my lifestyle to live within my means.
It was a harsh lesson but things have turned out ok for me.
