1 step forward, 2 steps back?

Hi guys, just feel like venting :(

As some of you may know, my family have had a hell of a struggle over the past few years. It came to a head last year when we ended up selling anything that wasn't nailed down and entering a DRO. A number of weeks ago we were discharged and could finally say we were debt free.......or so we thought

This morning I get home from my night shift to find a letter from our water provider stating they were starting court proceedings over an overdue amount. I had received a bill 2 weeks ago and immediately phoned them as there was a large amount owed to them that was incorporated into the DRO, it was left as the litigation team would contact me within 48 hours. I heard nothing until this letter.

When I spoke to them this morning, my OH was on the phone to the OR. SWW said that when CAB contacted them and requested a full and final figure to place onto the DRO they were told it was £1110.81. They then started looking into my file and 'found' a debt they had 'disregarded as it was so old' (they were his actual words!). They had withheld this information until AFTER the DRO was granted, knowing full well that it couldn't be added onto the order. According to the OR, there were several letters back and forward between them and the outcome was that it wouldn't affect the DRO but they had to inform me immediately that this balance was outstanding.

It has taken them A YEAR to inform me of this :eek:

I am furious, not to mention devastated as this month is the 1st month in over 5 years that we have felt stress-free and like we finally have control over our finances. I feel like I have been shafted.

Why is it big companies are able to do this to people? I am in no doubt that they knew that, once the order was granted, the details can't be changed and this is a bill that they can dump on people when it suits.

GRRRR!!! Rant over, sorry xx

    Hi Sacha,

I feel your frustration and i hope the 'rant' let it all out :) I guess all you can do is make some form of arrangement to pay, but don't let that take the shine of your achievement. Okay, so this is an 'old debt', but perhaps it might help to simply view it as a bill, rather than a debt.

Move on and enjoy being debt free - nothing can change that :j

Just how old is this bill? If it is over 6 years old and you haven't paid or acknowledged it in this time it may be statute barred and unenforceable.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.
