Removing oil mark from pan

I moved house recently and my mum bought me a lovely steel frying pan. I am still getting used to the cooker so I left the pan on the heat for a little too long and it has a nasty brown mark in the middle that regular cleaning with a sponger scrubber won't remove. I tried soaking it in water, boiling some water with some washing up liquid on it to lift the stubborn mark but it lifted some of the non stick coating instead! I've only used it twice but it looks like I'd had it a couple of years! Is there any way I can remove the stain?

Try boiling it up with some white vinegar in it. It certainly lifts burnt on food so may work.
