Do You Celebrate the Anniversary of the Engagement, or the One You Met?

This was a conversation I had with my bf, and we seem to have differing views. This was sparked by the fact he will propose some point this year (he has the ring!).

Obviously right now we celebrate the anniversary of when we go together, as that is our significant date.

He won't propose on that date (been and gone), so I assumed that our 'anniversary' would then change to the date of engagement. He says no, it remains as the date of meeting which I find strange? I know obviously you celebrate the day of marriage, but this interim stage has me stumped.

Any ladies/guys can offer their views? We will be having a long engagement hence the confusion caused! Probably a minor issue in the scheme of things but I'm interested to hear other opinions :)

i think that once you are married its the wedding anniversary you celebrate...

However saying that we do like to remember the day we met andthe day we got engaged too..although thats more of just saying "happy anniversay" to eachother rather than a celebration.

It tends to be me who remembers dates rather than him

I know once we get married that will be our anniversary, and the day we met/engagement will not be celebrated in the sense of a dinner, but acknowledged anyway :)

Just wondering whether people celebrate (before they have gotten married!) their engagement as an anniversary or stick to the day of first becoming a couple.

It's a random question, I know. I have a slight ulterior motive though as the date we first got together is sooo inconvenient (romantic, I know!) as it is two weeks before Valentines, the day before my Dad's birthday and a week after my little Nephew! Hence why I would prefer a different date.

Plus I think it's a shame that we celebrate the two romantic day/celebrations in two weeks then nothing for the rest of the year.

Apart from our wedding anniversary, the only other significant date for us is the date we met.

We didn't see the point of getting engaged. We just got married :)

Neither. Cant recall when I met or got engaged to the OH.

I do know the date of our wedding though.
  • We're greedy and celebrate them all lol mainly because our wedding anniversary will be the date that we met again after 7 years apart but we acknowledge the actual first met date in sept, engagement in nov and then wedding/ second meeting in jan xxx

I would love to be able to pick different dates but sadly life gets in the way...

Ive now been married for many years so what might start as a romantic day can get clouded through the years...

We met quite close to christmas...and still acknowledge that...we got engaged a few weeks later and its always been acknowledged as a special day for us....until last year when it became the date of my mothers death...cant change it now thats life...
We married on a lovely day in the summer months....and sadly that date is now tainted because its the day before my dads death...so romance doesnt always follow the path you want

Depends on what you mean by celebrate. Why not celebrate both dates?

I think we celebrated both, but we got engaged within a year of meeting, so wouldn't have had an anniversary of meeting otherwise.

we celebrate the day we first met still with drinks and meal out.

Though engagement announcement was on Valentines day which is also my birthday so we celebrate that anyway.

I can't even remember the date on which we got engaged, and it was only last year. It was a formality anyway, as we'd been planning the wedding for sometime.

We did however celebrate our 'last' anniversary in November (no really, we both independently made each other cards that said 'Happy Last Anniversary'), as that was the anniversary of when we started going out, but by next November we'll be married, and hence will only have a new anniversary to celebrate! (We've decided to only celebrate the wedding anniversary once we're married, too many anniversaries is just too much opportunity for me to get into trouble because I'm a scatterbrain and likely to forget)

We also celebrated our "-1st" wedding anniversary, as we happened to be going out with a group of friends exactly a year before our booked wedding.
