After my unsuccessful shop yesterday in Sains, I thought I would have another try today. Can someone tell me please if all items have to be a Brand to compare when adding up to £20 spend?

nope, just spend £20 on anything.

Only branded items can increase/decrease the value of your BM

Absolutely anything that is S own brand is a safe filler

No you could just buy a towel or something with the surf. The towel may then be wrong colour for your bathroom;) hth
