Have they not advertised the new posts somewhere as if they have how can they stop you from applying in response to the advertisement?

They can't stop me from applying as such, but I already asked my manager and the Senior Receptionist about being considered for the role and they both told me no. However, the postions have now been filled as they wanted them to start asap, so I can no longer apply.

Sounds like the Senior Recptionist is extremely unprofessional and it could blow up in her face too.

She shouldn't be passing on information like this, all it does is cause distress. She could actually be disciplined for it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Explain to them the reason you want to do these new roles...

    1) More hours so you assume more money, and 2) Because you thrive on variety, and think that you would shine if you were constantly/periodically working in different places and meeting more people etc.

At the end of the day, companies pay what they can get away with, no 2 jobs are truely the same, so they have been advised that to get the right people to apply they need to pay more. I suspect that if you looked, you'd find that it's possible to get 20 or 30% more than you are on now.

So, spoke to the Senior Receptionist today and she seemed very understanding about the situation. She didn't have a go at me for listening in on her conversation (I guess she realised she had been unprofessional by making calls at the reception desk), so it wasn't that bad.

She said unfortunately that's the figure the new contractor pay for support staff, and she'd raised the issue with our manager herself when she'd found out the salary they would be getting.

She is going to help me push for more hours so I can bump up my wages, but I think it's time to start looking elsewhere! :(

Thanks for all the help!
