Fly Spray

Two days into spring and the flies are up, about, and buzzing around driving me crazy! I had some Raid left over from last year, so I sprayed, then I sprayed, then I sprayed some more and the little blighters wouldn't die! I thought maybe my tin of Raid was out of date, so I got some more today and this tin is just as useless as the last tin. Can anyone recommend some fly spray or treatment that does actually kill flies? I think I'd have more success throwing the tin of Raid at them and killing them than using the spray!

Won't kill them,, but I have heard, putting lavender at your doors and windowsills will stop them coming into the house.
I have no idea if it works though!

There are two different types of "Raid"
One is natural and eco friendly or something, and the other one kills flies. :D

I use Baygon. Never seen it in this country, but we buy it in France. It was recommended to me years ago by a workmate.

It's strong stuff. My husband always reckons use enough and it could kill a human! I normally spray just as I'm about to go out or downstairs before going to bed.

No, the other one doesn't kill flies, that's the one I bought. It's rubbish.

I agree about the Baygon. I used to use it when I lived in Hong Kong. It's good stuff, I wish we could buy it here.

We've found some of the sprays need a really good shaking to get the stuff to work.

  • I've had five flies buzzing about since Sunday, they've received spray apon spray ( cans vigorously shaken), and two of them are still here. This morning I've sprayed them three times, and they are still buzzing around. The other three have either flown away or died of malnutrition! I'm at a loss....and off to The Big River to see what's available.....

These http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flys-Away-Red-Top-Trap/dp/B000UE07TU are brilliant; disgusting, but brilliant, especially if you are plagued with flies. Friends of ours here in France live near a chicken processing plant and the fly problem was horrendous until they tried the Red Top - it really works well for them.

Spendless - I tried Baygon but could not stand the smell!

The red tops were recommended to me by someone on the pets board here last year.

They are AMAZING. We live on a farm and notably, next to a milking parlour. Dairy cows are notorious for attracting flies, and our kitchen was suffering. The red top reduced the problem to ' normal' levels and then a flypaper did the rest (no, not nice, fly papers, but nicer than flies, or IMO, than spray)

I've noticed that sprays no longer do the job, too. We use one of those battery-operated zapper devices - looks a bit like a small tennis racket; you press and hold the buttons on the handle and wallop the fly with the business end and ZZZZAP - one dead fly. DH is also pretty effective with a rolled-up Telegraph.:D
