    The manager did say it was an official verbal warning as they say they spoke to me last year about attendance and that it would be on my work record and the next step would be a written warning.

    Do you have a copy of the company disciplinary procedure? It probably doesn't provide for formal verbal warnings, only informal guidance/advice etc. Your union rep will be able to help you get hold of a copy. Please don't do anything until you a have spoken with your rep, you could end up making things worse for yourself unintentionally.
